Weekend Update

I got a late start on Friday after work, trying not to forget to pack any essentials. As soon as I hit the turnpike my eyes were drawn to the smoke and fire. Capturing a photo while doing 70mph was not the brightest idea. But I seem to have a knack of seeing theunusual more often than not. It was then I realized I forgot the laptop and my posts would be hastened until my return. My plans were to bed down at my sister Lisa’s home as nephew Eric was preparing a move to Brooklyn to pursue graduate studies. It would be awhile before I would see him again. I was pleasantly surprised to see his sister and my niece Caitlin as well. We spent the next hours catching up on their current lives and reminiscing about “back in the day”. Saturday morning it was back to Canonsburg and finding out the details that I needed in preparation for the wedding shoot. Friends Terry and Jackie were committing their lives to one another later that evening and the ceremony was taking place poolside in our old “association” clubhouse. Helping friends tweaking with final duties and preparations found us all soaking. It couldn’t have been a more humid day. I was concerned that rain may thwart this festive occasion. Luckily, the event came off without a hitch as rains pounded the outlying areas. We didn’t receive the much needed precip until almost 9pm that evening and it lasted only for a short time. The DJ was back up and playing in no time and the clubhouse provided dry refuge for those guests still imbibing and sharing stories. I don’t usually shoot weddings. They’re extremely difficult and by no means am I close to being professional.  The shots that I see perhaps may not be the ones suggested or even wanted. When photography becomes a job, then I no longer want to do it. But since Terry and Jackie are close friends I agreed to do this. Gratis. That would take the pressure off. If I screwed up, the guilt wouldn’t be nearly as bad had there be a contract involved. This was a labor of love and friendship. I would love to share some of the wonderful photos of the wedding but would be remiss until all of them are processed and turned over to the newlyweds. It’s only fair. But I can’t help stick one of the blissful couple in here just to taunt them a bit. On Sunday I journeyed south once again to take Caitlin to breakfast at the airport restaurant and listen to the take of the world from the prospective of a twenty-one year old. I take so much from the mouths of babes. My learning experience continues to take my by surprise.

Dogs Days of August

Daily posts are absent due simply to lack of adventurous or envelope pushing days. Don’t misinterpret this for malaise or boredom. I’m loving my days. Working at the cafe is still a labor of love as opposed to ‘a job’. Hitting the links still happens at least once a week, but it has become more of a challenge. Robin’s continued improvement has me scrambling to keep pace with her scores. Thank goodness I still have a keen putting eye or she would be spanking me into shame in front of the boys at the turn. Ryan and Carolyn visited us this past week for an overnight stay and then we returned a visit on Tuesday to help Ryan in his home office. If I were still working a day to day job, he would be my envy, being able to work from home. However, his pace is far too great and stressful for my tastes. Erin will be tracking out soon to trek north to visit with us and spend two weeks traversing between LIW and southern Jersey with Ryan and Carolyn. My daily workouts have become routine and I’m guilt ridden when I miss a day. I’ll continue to push to be in the best shape possible for the upcoming surgery. However, the week’s end finds me trucking back to Pittsburgh to shoot a friends wedding this Saturday.Neighbors, Terry and Jackie will be taking their vows poolside and it’s presenting a challenge. I’m lacking for unique ideas and the ambient lighting will be dim due to the 7 p.m. event time. It will be good to visit the old neighborhood and commiserate with friends that are in my thoughts on a daily basis. Mike, the Porkmeister will be filling in for me at the cafe. And that reminds me of last week’s barbecue event that he entered near Gap, PA. Mike used my rub on his ribs and took home a third place. I’m sure it was the way he does his pork for his winnings but I like to believe I had a small part in that. Mike has entered numerous contests in the past and has taken down many firsts as a result of his special techniques. His barbecue is about the best I’ve ever sampled. Mike takes over for me at the cafe when I disrobe of my apron at 2 in the afternoons. This works out best for both of us. Mike is not too partial to doing breakfast, which I love and I’m not too fond of dinner, which is his forte. Robin will be his sidekick this weekend as she has no fill-in at the cafe so she won’t be able to make the wedding trip. And now we welcome the rains from above. We’ve been without precip for some time now and with the heat in the 90’s and the humidity as high, the change is more than welcome.

Questioning Home

I’m beginning to question myself. Pulling back into Lake In Wood campground the other day we found ourselves saying it’s good to be back home. Home? What is that? My quest was that the bus would be our only home for the next few years, with anywhere America becoming our backyard. But this place is creeping into my psyche. Both Robin and I are finding solace, camaraderie, and a sense of ownership while working here in the cafe. This feeling is the antithesis of wanderlust. Coming to work in the mornings is not like actually going to work. We get to meet new people everyday, commiserate with those of the recent past, and I find myself looking at the grille as my palette in which to compose another piece of art cuisine. It’s almost scary. Last night we went out with other workampers for dinner. That’s the Thursday night ritual. And I’m reminded once again that it’s not about the location, or the amenities, or the job. It’s about the people, that human interaction of which is so tantamount to contentment. Everyday we’re reminded of what a good choice this was, deciding on living with a myriad of gnomes.
