We’ve taken several airboat tours with Captains Dee and Darald of Alligator Cove Excursions. In fact, this is the fourth time in the last two years on the chain of Central Florida Lakes and we’ll be back with more friends. Our hosts seem to be more accomodating with each visit, if that can be possible. We met Jerry and Cherly early enough to catch up on this past summer and checked out their new SmartCar. We arrived a bit early yesterday to greet our friends and catch up with their business since last January. Dee had brewed some fresh coffee and her pound cake was warm and still dripping with melted glaze. What a welcome back! Jerry and Cheryl were taken aback a bit as you just don’t find business owners who treat their clients in this manner. Out on the water by noon with Darald as Dee had some business at home in which to attend. We’re not out five minutes before a breakdown. Hot water spewing out of the overflow. We’d blown a fan belt. Not to worry. Jerry, Mr. Fixit was onboard but Captain Darald had the rubber changed and added water to the radiator in no time. We were flying down the Kissimmee in less than ten minutes. Again, our host treated us to historical data and lessons anew to us once again. We were privy to at least two dozen ‘gators, soft-shelled turtles, shells, and a host of aviary of which I don’t remember all the names. It was a bit difficult trying to get shots of all this flora and fauna, while moving at speeds enough to catch a glimpse of everything. However, Darald did stop whenever we asked and I was able to steady my hands long enough to get some great shots of our bald eagle in flight. Our captain had lured him in with a piece of fish that he layed in a marsh full of a variety of Florida’s bovines. We spent a great couple of hours on the water and once again, back at the house, Dee presented us with some photos, a souvenir mug, as well as great conversation and camaraderie. This is, truly, a great experience. I would suggest that anyone within a two hour drive of Lake Wales, visit Alligator Excursions for the ride of a lifetime.
Meeting Old Friends Again
Parked in a holding lot in the rear of Classic Coachworks in Lakeland, Fl, we revel in the fact that this is just a temporary stay for some permanent improvements. We’ve decided to renovate ‘the Rev’ for the time being. I shall post before and after photos to show the work as it is in progression. I think today’s agenda will find the booth being removed to make way for a new dinette area. We received a call from Jerry and Cheryl, two wonderful people we befriended while working this summer at Lake in Wood resort. They’re wintering for the time being in Sebring and they’ve asked us along on an air boat tour. This morning we met with the owner and manager of Classic Coachworks finalizing all the work that is to be done. On to Mickey D’s for some drive through breakfast and a trip down to Lake Wales to meet our friends. As a gesture of goodwill, their friends have offered to doggie sit for Brutus and Chery’s dog, Gracie. Hopefully all will have a dandy day. As soon as I can download the photos, I’ll post a slideshow tomorrow.
Learning New Lessons
We visited LongView RV to see if we could pick up a few ballasts for the flourescent lights in the bedroom closet. Like always the display of motorhomes caught my attention. Before you know it, we’re touring a rig that has piqued my interest, going through the ritual of imagining living in it. Is it user friendly, does it fit our style, does the shower fit me? A myriad of questions and tests that we put any rig through. The saleslady couldn’t have been nicer. This was our first experience with the fairer sex on an RV lot. Finally, the imminent trip to the office to hear the financial damages that such a trade would entail. I know going in what the figures need to be for me. I’ve done this countless of times while in the workaday world. I’m good at numbers and I’ve had a personal friend that has owned an RV business most of his life. He informed me long ago of the markup and to buy anything more than at a 30% discount would be foolish. The dealer still makes a profit at this number. And then the fun part begins. A general manager walks into the office, taking over from the salesperson.
Let the games begin. I just love when they think you have no idea of what you’re doing. This particular gentleman talked to us as if we were newbies to the RV world and how wonderful a deal he would give us just because he “liked us”. I snicker inside. He is going to give us a deal whereby he doesn’t even make a profit, helping him out by merely removing the rig from his lot. All I have to do is put down $20k and increase monthly payments by $300. Over a 20 year period that amounts to an EXTRA $92,000 more than what we’re paying now. What a deal! Could you pass this up. Well, sadly we did. Decidedly, we moving on to Lakeland today to have a few upgrades done this week. The ‘rev’ is in such good condition, user friendly, and so comfortable that we just can’t justify trading for a bit more glitz and new. We’re just not into glitz, regardless of the cost. It will be a good day to travel as the sun beats on our faces and fortunately the weather in this part of Florida has been in the 70’s. I’ll take photos of the work being done on the rig this week.
