May Day, Justice Served and a Sideline Business

We’ve been in western Pennsylvania now since Saturday. I have yet to see the sun. If it’s not raining, the skies are filtered with heavy clouds and my Seasonal Affective Disorder kicks in. However, the visit has proved so far to be victorious in a physical sense. The neurosurgeon found nothing but progress since the brain surgery. My cancer surgeon suggests no need of a trache anymore and has scheduled an out patient stint to cover the opening in my neck, trying in vain to cosmetically improve this face. Good luck with that. A clean bill of health was celebrated with the erasure of Osama Bin Ladin. Our host, Jay, thrilled us with fireworks and flag hangings until the wee hours of the morning the other day. Neighbors came out of their homes, searching for a clue as to what all the hoopla was about as most of them had already retired. But my friend is the consummate pyromaniac and if there exists but a slight reason for fire or an aerial display, he will surely come through. As a Christian, I have never celebrated or remotely relished in the death of anyone. But honestly, there was a sense of accomplishment in my heart when I heard the SEALS were successful in their mission. Justice was served and I felt better. In the meantime I have been able to procure Canon’s best of it’s line. I was successful in acquiring the 85mm 1.8 portrait lens, however, I’ll use it more than for just that. I have gone into the greeting card foray as several followers have asked to purchase my cards that have my photos inserted on the front opening. I will delve more into this in the near future as fellow workampers follow this blog. Having a side business makes great sense for those of us on the road. The monies garnered are paltry, but that is not the main intention. Your own business can alter your tax situation admirably for you and I would love to share with you my good fortune in discovering this outlet.

Possessed with Time

I’ve begun my daily trek of undulating the hills and dales of Yellow Hill Road once again. The six mile round trip was initiated last summer in preparation for the brain surgery. This season, it’s more about persistence and wanting to relish in the elixir of physical penance. I need to push myself and as I do I’m possessed by the thought of time. I am humbled by the disparity between geological and human time, humbled by the fleeting nature of my existence. I don’t have the luxury of changing my shape over the epochs. Life is short. Time is of the essence. But if I am going to make the most of my life, if I am going to strive for some heroic contribution, then it may take awhile. I may need all the time I can get. And so I persist in keeping on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is filled with educated derelicts.  Persistence and determination are alone omnipotent. ‘Press on!’ has been and always will be the answer to every human problem. I’m just sayin’.

Our Daily Bread

I could have inundated you with daily minutae but chose not to bore you. I’ve been receiving my daily bread and trying to forgive those that have been trespassing my mental tolerance. The week has been filled with time spent at the putting green, practicing, practicing. Laundry here and there, walks through the park but mostly stopping to engage with neighbors with not only pleasantries but tales seasoned with exxagerations much like we all do. A few visits to the children, some holding and angel kisses for our new grandson, topped with a wonderful Easter celebration at the parents of our daughter-in-law. I’ve often wondered if there is a term for those people. Yes, they are in-laws to my son, and parents to his wife, but to us, what is the term? Is it outlaws?  Surely not. They’re lovely people. If there is such a term, please inform me. Perhaps tomorrow I shall begin anew my photo essays on the life of the “common people”.
