A Splendid Week

Willow Tree Resort held a Christmas party for all snowbirds and anyone else that wanted to attend. I invited Mike and Gail as my guests. They know a lot of the people here and they’re good friends so that was enough reason for me. Everyone brought an appetizer or covered dish and the host provided the ham. We were also allowed to BOOB. That’s bring our own bottle. I brought two of them and sharing was on an extremely limited basis. I found myself dancing and that’s not usually me. Near the close of the festivities, I found myself crooning Do Wop to Virginia through the empty end of a bottle neck. Laughing so hard she ran to the bathroom so as not to create more of a mess.

Speaking of Chester and Virginia, they’re a godsend. Without an enclosed vehicle their jeep has provided solace in the face of rain and cold when I need groceries, an errand run, or just plain need to get out and feed the gypsy spirit. Jack, the neighbor two streets over has been great as well, giving me rides twice a week to a bevy of golf courses that residents here frequent. These guys sure know how to find a good deal. Just the other day we played Diamondback, a very competitive and well-managed course. The total bill was $16 and that included a breakfast sandwich, coffee, a lunch sandwich, chips and two beers. The owner must have had way too many beers himself when he advertised this winter special.

I’ve been spending more time in the exercise room than anytime since the cancer surgery.  My attempt has been to thwart the sluggishness of metabolism that seems to go hand in hand with the creeping of the years. I’m feeling better and even had to buy a new belt. It’s improved the golf game as well. Without Robin to chat with and limited television stations, I’m finding myself able to get there twice a day now.

The resort was good enough to sponsor a van the other day to view the Carolina Opry Christmas show. I was a bit leery at first. The venue was magnificently decorated but the initial act was a bit hokey. Boy, did they prove me wrong. After 3 hours of solid entertainment, I can attest it was one of the better shows that I’ve viewed. I would recommend it heartily. And easy to get to, situated at the forks of Business and Bypass 17 in North Myrtle Beach.

I answered an ad yesterday I found on Craigslist. They liked my resume. Tomorrow I have an interview. I’ll pass this along when I know more.

The Southern Sky

“There are stars in the Southern sky southward as you go, There is moonlight and moss in the trees”

The never ending attempt at girth reduction has continued this week. I’m finding it a bit easier not to overindulge with tasty cuisine as I have no one to impress with my culinary skills and preparation for oneself finds making a three course meal not worth the effort. Mornings are dotted with walks and visits to the gym, which the owners at Willow Tree have improved upon immensely. Precor eliptical and and treadmills are now the mainstay. If anyone is familiar with exercise equipment, you’ll know that Precor is the top of the line. However, friends continue to put obstacles in my path with dinner invitations, luncheon meetings and accidental stops at buffets.

Chester and Virginia hollered over the other morning asking if I were interested in viewing another campground. I never turn down a chance to find a better venue. It’s a habit of mine. As soon as I set down for some period of time, the quest starts for more palatable digs. I used to call it arrested adolescence, the condition of never being satisfied. There has been a brief period when family discussions centered around the possibility of having Attention Deficit Syndrome. However, a wise man, my sage, my firstborn, has re-entitiled it a condition called, “infinite curiosity”, and I like that moniker much better.   Off we went, to contrast and compare. Little did I know our journey would cover 6 campgrounds and RV parks, almost 100 miles and by the time that half dozen was finished it was mid afternoon and Virginia suggested a stop at the Golden Corral. I hadn’t been to one of those in years. And my, what a mistake. I erased three good days of watching my carb intake, but the company made for a good trade-off. There is no RV park in the greater Myrtle Beach area that comes close to Willow Tree in aesthetic surroundings, price, and all around amenities. This is a 5 star park.

The Porkmeister and Gail live only a few miles from here. They’re kindred spirits along with Robin and me in the Gnome Cafe. Mike is the cafe manager, smoker-griller extraordinaire, and performs his culinary magic on the afternoons shift. I had delayed visiting or calling upon them until Mike’s bout with kidney stones was but a memory. On Friday, we agreed to meet at Captain Poo’s for the Friday seafood special. I had reviewed Poo’s about a year ago and if you’re interested, just go to Trip Advisor and type in Poo’s of North Myrtle Beach. For a mere $7 we feasted on two large portions of flounder, fries, hushpuppies, and slaw.  After shopping for next week’s Christmas party, my chauffeurs dropped me off at my nest. There was a note on the door, stating that I should come to Site #18 for a surprise. Hopping on my bike, I pedaled over and didn’t recognize the motorhome. Although the door was open and the dogs barking, no one was home. I pedaled to the office, thinking there must be a mistake or a practical joke was in the making.  Sue, the office host, told me that visitors had noticed my gypsylarry.com decal on the rear of my motorhome and were surprised and excited that I was here. She called the site and found the inhabitants were home. Backtracking, I was shocked to see old and genuine friends, Tom and Nancy Dreyer. We had casually met there here at Willow Tree five years ago. We connected again at a restaurant in Raleigh and from then on we have kept in contact over the years. It’s ironic that they pulled in first of the week as did I and only on a walk in the park with her friend Yuko did they happen across my abode. Although I almost declined, I couldn’t pass up their invitation for dinner as Yuko and husband Tom were bringing pasta, sauce, and meatballs to accompany Tom’s salad and Nancy’s wine. Sitting around the fire topped off a great evening. We all reveled in the thought that here we were, almost mid December, sitting around a fire in short sleeves, gazing and the stars in the Southern sky.

The Trevails of Squatting

I arrived at Willow Tree RV Resort a mere three hours after leaving Charleston.  I’ll be a campground squatter for another month here.  After checking in and finding my site the routine began. I’m not sure I do it correctly and most RV’ers have their own special method but help me with my itinerary if you would be so kind.  Discharge the airbags and lower the coach, place wooden planks at four points so jacks don’t rest on asphalt, hit the automatic leveler. While this is all happening I hook up the water, sewage and electric. By this time, the coach is leveled and I come in and eject the three slides, set up the dining table, move my recliner back to its position for ultimate TV viewing and have the TV go through its automatic scan searching for as many channels as I can find. Next step is to put on some coffee so it’s ready when I’m ready to vacuum, roll out the area rugs and open windows to allow in for fresh air. By now, I’m ready for that coffee and I find the vacuuming can wait. While searching for some viewing entertainment I look out the window and ‘lo and behold are former fellow workkampers, Chester and Virgina, just two sites away from me.  They both worked at Lake In Wood this summer and provided many a belly laugh for Robin and me.  The rest of the afternoon is spent is trading stories, cajoling and lying out the ass to each other. Anymore work can wait for tomorrow.  A ribeye on the grill and some sauteed snow peas are the order of the evening to be followed with some Monday Night Football culminating a slow day.
