As we motored down I-95 I thought about where we might be just before sunset. I don’t cotton much to setting up in the dark anymore. It was then that I phoned my old friend Tom Dreyer. We met Tom and his wife Nancy four years ago while we were at our first working stint and they were visitors to the campground. We made fast friends, kept in touch, and visited when they returned to their home just outside Raleigh. I hadn’t seen them in a year, visiting just before the brain surgery. Tom and Nancy are now the managers at the Fayetteville KOA. His voice was welcoming, they were looking forward to seeing us, and they had plenty of room for a short stay. I told Tom we’d be there in four hours.

We spent two glorious days in their company and they couldn’t have been more gracious hosts. Tom and I traded a site for a photo shoot opportunity, hoping that some of my work could help market the campground for them in the next brochure. We feasted with a small group in the social hall on Thanksgiving leftovers, met some new folks and chatted until the late hours. The next day Robin and I set out for some photo work, explored the campground, made a food run to Walmart. Tom and Nancy have completely turned this campground around for the better. Anyone traveling up and down I 95 needs to mark this as a waypoint. The campground is easy off and on, being a mere 1/2 mile from the interstate. All the sites are flat, graveled, well maintained with aesthetics that are pleasing to the eye. They make you feel as if your royalty when you enter the office and it is in evidence very much that the customers well being is the main tenet of operations here. Saturday night we were hosted at the site of John and Yuko for another round of “tales around the fire”. Hitting me like a Louisville Slugger, it was then I realized again what makes this life so special. We’ve done it in two dozen states, amid a vast amount of differing flora and foliage, under stars and moonlit skies.

The fire is always brilliant orange and hot, the names of the people are changed from one venue to another but the stories, the laughter, the camaraderie is always “the holy grail” that we seek. Cynthia and Jim joined in and as the stories unfolded I had to laugh at the common thread that ran thoughout every get together by the fire. They’re all the same and yet, each one different. We left amid morning hugs and kisses, Tom and Nancy proving hosts hard to leave. But we’ll return. On our journey north to Christmas with the children, we’ll stop again and spend some time. Thank you, my friends, for just being you.

We left Lake In Wood last weekend, leaving the rig on site for the insurance adjuster to address. We headed West in the truck for a few weeks of visiting friends. Our plans were to meet up with Tom and Deanna at Table Rock Lake in western Missouri. Tom and Deanna are friends we worked with at the Elkhorn Cafe in North Dakota and haven’t seen them since January of 2010. Traveling through the Midwest is a mesmerizing endeavor, such that I had forgetten that one needs constant stimulation in the form of music or conversation to keep from running amuck. There is not much to visualize in the bread basket, especially at this time of year. We made it to St. Louis by Sunday and that evening bunked down in Sullivan, MO. By midday Monday we had encountered our guests, stopping at Tom’s new purchase first. They had bought a storage facility and were in the process of remodeling it. They plan on adding an apartment for their stay between jaunts to North Dakota and Arizona.
We were guests of Deanna cousins who own the Big Creek resort actually on the lake. The honeymoon suite was our abode for the next four days and just a stone’s throw from the lake. Luckily it was a full moon this week and the evening shots made for some great photos despite a constant downpour for the first two day. We visited their relatives, friends, and were hosted in homes for dinner as if we’d been going there for years. I met the most interesting of men….Uncle Lester. Uncle Lester is a throwback to the inventor of days gone by. His shop is meticulous, he has every tool imaginable and some unimaginable. However, he buys almost nothing, making it all from scratch or inventing whatever he needs. There were too many items in the shop to discuss but his air powered, homemade tricycle caught my eye the most. He even gave Robin a performance in the yard as his pride in workmanship showed through. Tom and Deana took us to out to lunch, out to dinner, shopping around and even a long day trip to Branson, the Nashville of the west. We scoured through store after store so the ladies could continue to put things into the RV’s and took in a show that evening. An Indian powwow, put on by Lakota Sious out of Brule. The costumes and dancing were great but the music was wonderful. What I thought might be a so-so experience proved quite entertaining. We had planned to stay longer but a call from Florda prompted our stay be held to four days. We had been offered jobs in Naples as resort directors and the owner asked they we arrive a bit earlier than expected. After spending the last night chatting and playing board games with Tom and Deanna we headed back to western PA for the final visit of the year to family. We spent our first travel night in Indiannapolis. And I was reminded of how much I needed to see some hills again. Be thankful for where you are….as you shall miss it when you’re gone. Back in western PA now for a weeks visit with friends and relatives since we won’t be here for Thanksgiving. Christmas shopping, visitations, football playoff games will be the key words for the week.

09/11/01 is stamped indelibly in our minds. We remember the morning, where we were, and the aftermath of that infamous date. Not to diminish those events, I commemorate that day in my own personal way. 9/11 was the date I chose for my cancer surgery and this marks my fourth anniversary sans the dreaded “Big C”. I celebrated with my son at the Bertil Roos Driving School by careening around the Pocono Raceway at speeds of 130 mph. Her purchased this day as a gift for my most recent birthday, sheduling it on this infamous of days. We drove the three hours to the Poconos on Saturday night, staying in a nearby hotel in order to be on time for Sunday morning. We arrived at the school by 8 a.m., registered, got fitted with our racing suits, helmets and sat in on the first of four lessons. Then it was off to the track, speeding first around the track in Malibu’s to garner a sense of the layout. Into the trailer for more instructions on handling, flags, and how to forget almost everything you were taught in regular traffic driving. Fitting into a Formula racer was the first feat for this mesomorph. The first run we were only allowed to do 85 mph until we gained a feel for the track. We, (there were five others along with Ryan and I) motored the track for 20 minute sessions, taking hairpin turns, passing on the inside along the wall, and doing our best not to spin out. That doesn’t seem like much but believe me , at high speeds that twenty minute session took it’s toll physically. After each session it was back into the classroom to be critiqued by four instructors that monitored our progress on the track. With each 20 minute session we got better and faster. I didn’t spin out until my third session. That was due to the fact that I was feeling a bit cocky, able to get my speed up well over 120, and allowed the Formula roadster to get a little out of control. It didn’t flip, but I did a complete 360, four times in about 3 seconds without peeing my pants. By the final of four outings on the track, I was as confident as I could ever imagine rolling down the wall at 132 mph, as we were clocked. I was hooked. I was possessed at taking the turns as narrow as possible, and burning the rubber in pursuit of whomever was in front of me on the track. The experience was the most exhiliarating, yet exhausting one I can remember. Holding onto that 9 inch wheel at those speeds tested not only the triceps but today it feels as if every sinewy nerve and muscle was taxed. I will be back. I’d like to say this was one more item on the bucket list, but that term is too finite and mortal. I have a long way to go and much to experience before I begin my bucket list. Until then, I’ll continue to be on the lookout for the ecstactic experience, what excites me or moves me to tears, that which makes the blood rush to my head, my heart skip a beat, my knees shaky and my soul sigh. Thank you, Ryan, for another day with my son, my friend, the thrill-seeker.

I’m pretty much pissed off about all this. I really screwed up. I drove back to Pittsburgh on Monday as I had scheduled myself for a simple procedure. In no need of a trache or stoma anymore, I decided to have my surgeon sew closed my neck. I vaccillated on this decision as it provided an alternative airway, giving me a comfort level, albeit a false sense of security. I constantly worried about water from the shower entering the orifice not to mention the fact that any water sports have been completely out of the question. I returned here to Lake In Wood, immediately after the procedure. My thinking being that the following day was going to be the most miserable and I wanted to be in the RV prior to the onset of anything negative. And I was correct. My neck has swollen to proportions that I now could play the part of Shrek. I have to sleep in a chair, and I’m semi-miserable. All this to engage in kayaking, boating, and water sports. But honestly, there is a dash of vanity in there as I disdained the hole in my neck. Now all this was for naught as the end is approaching and by Saturday we shall all perish in some way. However, I have scheduled a day with Ryan. We are attending an alumni feat as a father-son team at his alma mater. I can’t think of a better way to “Go Out”! And if it comes as scheduled, I’ll be in hell so look for me there, as I’m hoping to see most of my acquaintances there with me.

There still is a certain sense of acute awareness that exists here. It’s much more than the elusive “it” factor. The ambiance and environment is reasoning behind the 5* Star rating from Woodalls, but that is exceeded by the unique, congenial nature of its inhabitants. No where else do I find this familial karma. But we’ve not spent much time here lately. Back and forth to New Jersey, running errands, lending a hand, while being mesmerized by the sleep of the X-man. I made yet another trip back this morning, having left behind my C-pap, of which I cannot sleep without. Nephew Eric drove down from the Big Apple for the weekend, and he, Ryan, and I spent some time at the Verizon store. Robin’s birthday is today and I wanted to surprise her with a new IPhone. If you haven’t been to a mobile phone vendor lately, it ‘s worse than buying a new car. You leave with what you want, but the price paid to get there is heavy with tolls of mental frustration and anguish. Nevertheless, if it were easy to purcahse a birthday gift, I imagine it wouldn’t be as meaningful. Ryan’s technical repertoire was 0f significant help to me, since I am somewhat challenged by the complexities of the newest line of smartphones. Back at LIW Robin was not only surprised by ecstatic with the new gift. Later we engaged in our first activity of the season – all the pizza you can eat in the Gnome Cafe. It was a renewed sense of contentment as we reaqauinted with faces from last season. There will be much catching up with the sharing of winter experiences over the next few weeks. It was then my mind took on it’s familiar wandering at the speed of light. And while driving across the Delaware, my mind’s eye reminisced back some thirty-one years ago. It was then I recalled holding a precious newborn in my hands and wondering how my young years were going to change. My life has come full circle now as that child I once held, now stopped long enough for my lens; holding his son in much the same way.

I had been hankering for a diversion. I get bored easily and I’d had enough fishing and lying poolside for awhile. I thought it would be a nice trip to Segway the town of Cedar Key. I had been there a few weeks ago on my own but Robin needed to see what drew me to the area. We arrived at the Low Key Hideaway, managed by friends Pat and Cindy Bonish. I have followed their blog, “Every Miles A Memory” for sometime now and wanted to share some photo chat with them. They both possess excellent photographic skills. Pat allowed us to park in his drive while we motored around the peninsula. Our first destination was to head to the old Cedar Key cemetery as I heard about the young horned owls nestled in the treetops within the graveyard. We did spot a few osprey along with the baby owls but mother was no where to be seen. We then headed out to airport road checking on some waterfront property. We were able to view something that caught our eye but it was way out of our price range. Heading back into town my Segway died. Apparently I hadn’t charged it up for a few days and the battery just gave way. I borrowed Robin’s and headed back to the car while she waited roadside with my powerless man-carrier. Upon retrieving her we headed for some sustenance as we hadn’t eaten so far today. We parked at the wharf and headed to the Big Deck Raw Bar, and filled our bellies with wings, pulled pork and fries. We chatted with some other tourists from Michigan, relishing in the fact that we were all enjoying sunshine that is so sorely missed up north.

“Magoo and Mouse McKee”

While heading out I overheard two gentleman at the bar speaking of Pennsylvania. The two fellows indeed were from the Keystone state, asking as well of our hometown. It was then that “Magoo” and “Mouse” McKee, brothers in more than arms, told us they were from Washington, PA., a mere seven miles down the road from our hometown. The more we talked, the greater we found similar interests as well as knowing some of the same people. We spent another twenty minutes with them, laughing heartily and fondly reminiscing of “back in the day”. We left them with hugs and handshakes, mesmerized in the fact that here we were, 12oo miles from home and by happenstance meeting two people from just down the road. Magoo (real name Harry) even made a point to let me know his auto was parked just in front of mine proudly boasting the six time Super Bowl champs. We then headed back to the Low Key Hideway as Pat had opened the Tiki Bar our back and I wanted Robin to take in the ambiance of such a place. We would have loved to be able to imbibe until the sun set but Brutus had been holed up all day. We did get back by dusk and I was able to snap a shot of the setting sun going down on the Suwanee once again. Enjoy todays slideshow. It’s not like being there but hopefully it can bring a smile to your face.

This was our wake up call a few mornings ago.

After being greeted to this glorious sunrise, things started to change drastically for us. We were looking at a three hour ride to the Orlando airport but enroute were interrupted by Williston’s finest. Doing thirty-nine in a twenty-five zone landed me a yellow slip, which will cost me three hundred dollars within the next month. This put me in a bit of a funk as I pondered what I might be able to buy with that money. Things I was depriving myself of in an order to save some money. Hopefully, this would be the end of our misfortune. We continued on our trek. We had business in PIttsburgh. The skies of western Pennsylvania greeted us with their incessant gray and cloud cover. It’s amazing what the sun can do to one’s psyche. It was long after arrival that the sinuses started playing havoc as they did for decades while living in southwestern Pennsylvania. By the early evening, conversation became nasal and the ability to breathe properly was again in check. Over the next three days we would take care of banking, real estate, and tax issues that were pressing. It would be a relief to alleviate these items from that mental box of “pressing worries”. A smattering of kibitzing and feasting with siblings and best friends made the next few days not only palatable, but heart warming. This would be the only heart warming as the cloud cover continued its ominous control. On our final morning, we awoke to two inches of freshly fallen March flakes. This would delay the first leg of the trip to Philly by and hour and a half. Once there, freezing rains would find a similar delay. But Ryan hopped aboard our flight to join us in the ride to Orlando. The plans were for him to rent a Harley and he and I would enjoy Daytona’s annual Bike Fest for the week and engage in the camaraderie of just riding together. Monday morning welcomed us to sunshine once again. We headed out to Dick’s as Ryan needed to pad his golf bag for some anticipated time on the links with his dad. Following a bit of shopping we retrieved the Harley and began the trek back to Yellow Jacket RV Resort. The downward spiral continues. After hours of waiting, more hours of flight time, followed by a hotel bed, and a three hour motorcycle ride, topped of with testing a new driver, Ryan had entertained back spasms. They’ve proven severe to the point of hastening the trip to Daytona. A heating pad, massages, Flexoril, Advil, and Cat’s Claw has provided no relief. I feel his pain as year’s ago I entertained lower back discomfort for years prior to surgery. My hope is that he does not follow in his father’s footsteps. Time has not been his friend. We have cancelled any idea of Bike Week. The Harley sits idle as well as my iron horse. Ryan lays idle as well. Perhaps this was an omen, a fate which forbade us from the hectic pace of a biker festival. I’m trying to find a silver lining in all of this. In the meantime, I’m demanding his rest and recuperation in an effort to be able to make his flight north by the weekend. Time and rest will be the prescription for the next few days.

Sunday was time for a motorcycle road trip. I had spotted the Olustee Battlefield Park some weeks ago on a return from Jacksonville Airport. I remembered seeing a re-enactment to take place on this weekend. I saddled up the Stratoliner and headed out for Trenton, where I decided to take some back roads. Heading north on Highway 47 proved to be a prime riding road. I especially loved the historic little village of Fort White, which I will visit again. On to Lake City and then pick up Highway 90 to the park, which totalled 80 miles from the outset at Yellow Jacket Resort. I’ve been to Gettsyburg and their homage to the Civil War and they had nothing on this display at Olustee. The Battle of Olustee is historic, and you may decide to read about it by clicking on the link. It was just lengthy here to give you a history lesson. What I especially liked was the vast array of tents set up in period style along with the belles and gents in their period costumes. Sauntering through the woods toward the battlefield became almost surreal. You could almost meld into the surroundings and the time warp made me feel as if you were living more than a century ago. The equestrian hooves vibrated the ground beneath as a Confederate colonel gaited through his troops on the way to the artillery canons, and you could literally smell the sweat from emanating between saddle and horse. I met a Southern Belle named Linda, who in conversation told me about her tubing and rafting business located on the Ichetucknee River and State Park. There’s reason there for another road trip in the future. On to the battlefield and the actual re-enactment. It lasted a bit more than an hour and was quite interesting to watch the placement of troops and the still Continental style of fighting that was utilized. Compared with modern technology, guerrilla warfare and the battles of today, these Civil War tactics proved almost suicidal. The ride back was even more pleasant as the setting sun proved a beacon on my way west. A poste haste meeting of campground fulltimers seemed to be in effect later in the evening and it was decided we would all go on a pontoon outing for Monday afternoon. Hopefully the weather will comply. But in the meantime, dinner, a fire, and freshly made cupcakes by Robin while I was gone will be the fare for the evening.

After dropping Erin off at the airport, our plans were to pack up everything for the move down to Lakeland for the plumbing fix. The hardest rain I ever saw hit not only Yellow Jacket but almost the entire state. We did get a bit of a slow down, enabling us to pack the trailer with everything we could fit in it. We then parked it until our return, wondering if the deluge would lift it from the tires and float it down the Suwanee. The three hour ride to Lakeland had to be done at night with low visibility. Damn, these past two weeks are toughening us to no end. Greg Williams, CEO of Classic Coachworks couldn’t have been more accomodating. He immediately made our issue the priority of the work list. The problem wasn’t faulty craftsmanship, just something that happened. Like I said, luck has not been our companion this January fortnight. We have spent a day and a half here and the problem has been rectified. We just sit and await caulking to harden and then it will be back to the campground. We were able to procure police reports, the robbery incident report at the flea market, scanning and emailing documentation over to our insurance company and hopefully this will end the process on our part. So we made good use of the time spent here waiting. The down time has also enabled grocery shopping, laundry, and campground reviews to be done while work was progressing. We also like to survey surrounding campgrounds in order to give us an idea whether or not to add one to our list of visits. It continues to daunt me when looking at the photos of parks and grounds on the internet and then actually visiting them. Their photographers or photoshop illustrators are to be commended. They make squalor look inviting.

I’m lovin’ it as I sit for most of the day gazing out the window. There must be two dozen cats living in these parts. Robin calls them feral but I think they’re furry. They’re just not very friendly. They don’t want to play and everytime I go outside they just snarl and their yellow eyes start to glow as if tea lights behind them fire up. It’s not long after breakfast that I get this gnawing in the pit of my stomach. I hear Larry talking about having to fly back to Pittsburgh to take care of some banking business. My heart sinks. I hate when they fly somewhere. I never get to go. They think I can’t fit. I’m relegated to staying at the Banfield Hotel, tucked neatly within the Petsmart store. Don’t get me wrong. This is a swank place. But I don’t cotton well to other dogs. I’m pretty much of a loner and when the hotel guards retrieve me from my room, they put me in a gym with others and expect me to play with them. But alas! I hear Larry saying something about driving to the airport to check out possibilties. Robin smiles so I know this may be a good thing. I’m just going to lay in the backseat, lick myself, and see what they talk about. In less than an hour, we’re entering the short term parking lot. I see Igor Sikorsky’s name all over the place. Down on the elevator and it opens to a whole new world. Tons of people with little kids all standing single file for reasons unknown to me. It must be a Southwest store as they have their signs everywhere. A young lady leads us through a maze of fat ropes hooked to pee poles. Larry takes me in his arms and holds me up to a lady behind a computer. He asks her if I can fit on a ride to Pittsburgh. She tells him to hold on and leaves to go in the backroom. In a few minutes, out she comes with what looks like a new bed for me. I’m hoping. It’s even in Steeler colors. They unzip it and put me in. I’m not sure what to make of all this. My head gets tucked in. I feel like one of those turtle things. Robin zips up the sides and all I can see is a bunch of legs through the mesh that surrounds me. But I hear laughter and see Robin smiling. Hell, Larry is even grinning from ear to ear as the lady from behind the computer says he’s good to fly. OH! that’s me. I get to go now. I get to fly when they go to Pittsburgh. Or anywhere else for that matter. I hated when they left me for the wedding. No more Petsmart hotels. Not for this guy. I am beside myself. I’m going to get in that new bed in the backseat and sleep, pausing only for a lick here and there. I don’t care where they go now. I’m tagging along, bucco. These folks of mine sure know how to treat a guy.
