Mornings have been a bit foggy this week. But it soon lifts and the days have been full of sun.

We did experience that cold spell that hit the eastern seaboard but forty-eight hours later it was just a memory. Temps are now back in the mid 70′s.

We christened the first week of the year by boating with Lenny and Mary, Jerry and Barb. We ferried down the Suwanee for half a dozen miles to a new eatery located on its banks. Treasure’s Camp Resturant has recently opened at Fowlers Landing and brings with it that old Florida ambiance.

They also sell gasoline which alleviates any fears of running dry on the next eighteen mile leg to the Gulf. Jerry was kind enough to pick up the tab and my posse was also intrumental in filling the tank.

They felt that the least they could do since we provided the transportation. Remaning days have been interspersed with walking, afternoons spent poolside, learning to make new breads with my kitchen aid mixer that the kids gifted me for Christmas, and a great deal of time commiserating with other campers on anything and everything.

Robin and I took a solo trip down river just yesterday and on the return home were fortuante enough to spot a bald eagle circling us in flight.

Wanting so badly to see it swoop down on some prey, we were eventually rewarded but the focus was a bit wanting.

I know now that no matter the problem with its weight and bulk, the big lens will always accompany me on the river.

No matter the miles between us, the bond grows increasingly strong. We met them at the turnpike exit to help with directions to the campground but stopped and lunched at the Park Place Diner. Upon our arrival we toured Lake In Wood with Robin and Chris riding the golf cart while I introduced Jay to the thrills of the Segway. Leary at first, he mastered the gyroscopes and fifteen minutes later looked as if he was a master at this. They enjoyed the beauty of the park, were mesmerized by the cleanliness and abundance of flowers, but the coup de grace was the Gnome Cafe, namesake of our humble place of summer employment. The remainder of the afternoon was spent catching up on news, friends, and personal gossip. Jay did manage to sneak in a short nap. I think that Segway must have tinkered with his nerve a bit. By the time a few bottles of wine had been consumed, and the lawn chairs had been molded to our backsides we realized it was almost 8 and once again we were famished. We frequented once again our favorite haunt, Kyma Restaurant, in Denver. I have never tasted better crabcakes in all my travels and the place keeps beckoning me back over and over. It proved to the delight of both our guests. We all had ringside seats around the fire pit until the girls found some reality show they wanted to view. Jay and I soon followed as no see ums found our sockless ankles and proved a bit much for us.

We had to get in one more boat ride. A twelve mile trek across Lake Marion to the Goat’s Island restaurant , stopping off for a couple of burgers was the order of the day. The locals were on the pier trying thier luck with the catfish. On the way back, we got a bit disoriented and almost mired in a barrage of hidden treestumps that have destroyed many a motor. I played lookout while Robin manned the steering wheel trying to avoid the hidden cypress stumps below. It was a good thing I had the hand held Garmin mark a waypoint prior to leaving. We would have gone of course without it. This little gem has really come in handy during the past week. And then, another bittersweet exit. It’s been in the mid 80′s this week, incessant sunshine, lake like glass and a lot of time to practice casting. We weren’t ready to leave. On the other hand, we get our first granchild this week. It will be great to see our children and daughter-in-law, and re-aquaint ourselves with workampers from last summer. Talking on the phone to family, we’re not looking forward to April in Pennsylvania. It’s usually too wet and too dreary. But I’ve never had a grandchild and every one tells us our lives are going to change for the better. So damp days may be of trivial consequence. We left late in the afternoon and made it into Virginia by twilight. We decided to park in a Walmart Supercenter as we needed some groceries and wanted and early start to the morning departure. Much to our amazement, the Walmart looked like a campground with a rally taking place. Not only was the place packed, but slideouts were extended, antennae were raised and we noticed one French Canadian fifth wheeler with their satellite set on the ground. This is why so many Walmarts are stopping the practice of overnight rests. Too many taking advantage of a good and free offering. Hopefully by tomorrow we’ll make it to Bar Harbor on the Chesapeake. Until then.

After our airboat ride we returned to the home of Glen and Cindy to retrieve Brutus. They offered sitting services as headcolds put the kibosh on their attendance. I offered to treat them to a late lunch. Glen suggested the Cherry Pocket Steak and Seafood Shack as they are noted for their seafood.

About a half hour down the road we entered the marina/resturant lot and immediately the ambiance of ‘old world’ Florida had once again charmed my socks off. Once inside I realized that 4 p.m. is not taken by most as a late lunch. The eatery was a conglomeration of seniors who someone see this hour as ‘suppertime’. Perhaps we’ll go that route in a few years as well. I find I eat many of my words as my days turn into years. Glenn’s suggestion boded well as the crabcakes that I chose were some of the better I’ve sampled over the years.

My counterparts opted for the grouper sandwich platters of which I sampled as well. If ever in the Lake Wales area, go a bit out of your way off Florida Route 27 and visit Cherry Pocket for some great food and downhome ambiance. I was especially taken by the deck, which had an antique wooden hull brought ashore to serve as the bar.

What a unique idea. We enjoyed our company and afterward, Robin and I hit the trail back to Lakewood to see the progress on ‘the Rev’s’ renovation. Tomorrow we head back to Tampa to take in the annual Supershow.

I love sleepy, little harbor towns. Checking the map, I spotted a day trip to one of these that was put on the day’s agenda. I remembered seeing a segment on HGTV featuring a home constructed on stilts made of corrugated metal feed bins. That house was located on Horseshoe Beach. Exactly the spot I pointed to on the map. It wouldn’t be more than a forty minute drive. We headed west to Cross Keys, the county seat. I’m still in awe of the slow pace of life here, a throwback to the 50′s and towns that are not much more than a few intersections. It’s as if the rest of the United States exists outside and separate from this world. Driving through miles of protected national bird sanctuaries the first thing we viewed upon entering Horseshoe Beach was an old Nash Metropolitan Police car slowing traffic in front of the Dari-Delite. This was better than Mayberry. We tooled around the town, dipping our feet in the Gulf of Mexico, saw some upscale vacation homes, and the local marina. Finally, there it was, perched high above the Gulf. The home I had recognized from HGTV. The driveway was a huge, inclined boardwalk leading to a set of three huge corrugated storage bins. I noticed it was FOR SALE. I got out and picked up a circular. The home could be virtually toured via the internet. What a lucky find. The price had been reduced to a mere $1.5 million. It’s sad what the economic downturn has done. If only we had a few bucks more. Imagine waking up and looking down on the Gulf of Mexico every morning. Upon our return later in the day Jerry stopped by to see if we had any dinner plans. He informed us that he and Barb were going to dinner that night with Jim and Diane. Would we like to join them? We topped the evening off with a visit into Suwanee and the Salt Creek Resturant. They do well with the seafood but they may have the best burgers I’ve tasted since the Gnome burger at the cafe of the same name. It seems as if almost everyday I find some nuance, some link back to Lake in Wood. As the sun set on the eating deck of the resturant I snapped a shot of the setting sun. It seemed a good ending to another wonderful day.

We quickly became friends, dining together at the Neely’s, sharing stories and having Judy entertain us with her accordion. Over those last two years we have shared an occasional email. Reading this blog, they realized we were only an hour away from their home in Williston. On Sunday, they found us, taking an afternoon cruise and surprising us with a knock on the door. It was great to see them again. Last night we returned the trip to their home. The four of us packed into the car and they led us to the Ivy House Restaurant. The Ivy House has earned a reputation of excellence. Housed in a turn of The Century Southern Home, built byDr. Willis, whose father founded Williston, the old homestead was formerly a doctors office. The original trappings of the house remain intact and it’s easy to see the that history exudes from the house. I knew we were in cuisine heaven when I spied a photo of the owner, along with Bobby Flay, of The Food Network fame. Judy and Robin played it safe with baked chicken and Stoney opted for steak. Being in Florida I chose the seafood sampler and my palate couldn’t have been more titillated. My taste buds screamed ecstacy. And it seemed as if everyone else had the same experience. This place houses the quintessential ‘southern cooking’. The ambiance is wonderful, the service is great, but the cuisine may not be better. If you are ever within an hour of Williston, Florida, do yourself a favor and partake of the fare at The Ivy House just off Main St., north on Route 45 a mere 100 yards. After dinner I followed Robin upstairs where bling-bling is sold, while she shopped for Christmas gifts for Carolyn. The hostess snapped a photo of the four of us before leaving. Back at the house, Stoney storied us on the house and adjacent lands and how it had been in the family for centuries. This history was interesting to this buff. Judy proved guide showing us memorabila and photos from their lives. It was then I understood Judy’s penchant to take up the accordion. I saw photos of her father with Myron Floren, the polka afficionado that once squeezed the bellows, starring on the Lawrence Welk Show every Saturday night during my “Leave It To Beaver” years. It was then time to show our appreciation by devouring dessert as Judy had made us a pecan pie in celebration of our get-together. We spent some time chatting over the pie and laughing into the evening prior to heading back to Yellow Jacket RV. Judy even vamped for us in her attire from a recent trip to “Nawlins”. Today I was reminded of the greatest aspect of this free living, free-wheeling lifestyle. And that’s the relationships you build. Here are two folks that we met two years ago, out of sight for the next score of months. Then they took the time to look us up and travel to see us again. What a tribute to friendship.

We payed a visit to the Old Timey Town BBQ eatery. This was the most unusual place in which we’ve broken bread. The paraphenalia outside far exceeded any movie setting that could be imagined. This diner was constructed in 1975, however, all the materials — wood, pipes, etc. were at least 100 years old giving it a look from the previous century. It was as if we had gone through the “looking glass” and slid back more than those five score. Inside, we were seated at a very cozy booth just big enough for the two of us. A working fireplace adjacent to our table added that smokey flavor to the quisine. The eye candy far outnumbered anything we’d seen prior to coming in. There were antiques collected by the owner for the past 75 years. Mike and Frank of American Pickers would have had a field day here. A player piano kept us entertained while we ate providing music from the age of jazz. We had heard about the train room prior to coming here. We asked the owners wife and she explained that as soon as we had finished she would take us to an adjacent room where she would light up the “roundhouse” and let the engines tote their cargo around the room. I looked a bit puzzled. When we were informed that they were out of all the dessert pie we took her up on the offer. Amazed. There before us, they turned on five transformers, and engaged a couple of lines of Lionel’s O Guage. This collection had to be priceless and it was easy to tell this was no reproduction. These engines, track, and haulers were older than I was. The owner pointed out many more items of interest and the story behind many an antique. We spent more time learning history and perusing that it took to down that fine barbecue. It was by no means a five star diner but if you’re in the Savannah area, you owe it to yourself to partake and be entertained. Robin bid farewell to the dummy on the tractor, got in the car with her own dummy. We sat out under a full moon, talking aloud about the myriad of oddities we have been exposed to in this life on the road. Oh, how fortunate to have wanderlust genetics.

Today was the culmination of a great summer experience. Our last day at work here at Lake In Wood. The cafe was decorated far beyond most expectations as Jerome becomes quite the kid at heart during Halloween. His hidden artistic talent comes to the forefront. Robin and I proved the host at the cafe for the ghoulish festival. Some ninety campers payed homage to the dark and dank underworld of magic and the occult. The menu was sprinkled with dastardly dishes such as Scarecrow Stew, Boneparts (rolls, butter, utensils), Mummy Fingers (mozzarella sticks), Bat Ears (nachos) and a host of other unmentionables. Prizes were awarded to a host of participants, with a large majority of the crowd being baby boomers.

A contingent of campers that rallied here together outdid themselves and in my book took away the prize for their rendition of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. Following the cuisine at the cafe, trolley and hayrides through the park synced with the crisp night air. Warm apple cider was served at the outdoor fire patio where a bevy of seasonal gathered for final farewells. The park officially closes today as the water is shut off in all but the main bath houses. We shall leave tomorrow and head West for body inspections in preparation for the journey South. We didn’t see this much as workkamping. It was too much fun to be considered work. The friends, acquaintances made, and the human interaction was priceless. The week was bittersweet in saying goodbye to so many but knowing that tales will be shared when again we meet. As Shakespeare penned in his famous “Julius Ceasar”;

“We may not know the end of this day’s journey ere to come but suffices that the day will end and the end be known. If we meet again, we’ll smile. And if not, this parting was well made.”

We don’t usually work on Mondays but Jerome (park manager) asked us to work the cafe. It would be the season hurrah for the cafe. From here on out it only opens briefly on the weekends. Feeling it may be busy, he was sure we could keep up with the orders. Busy! Short order cook. Families came in droves and there was nothing short about any of their orders. This was the busiest day we had this summer. We’d expected that a lot of campers would be pulling out since school and work would be back in session the next day. They must have all decided to have breakfast prior to leaving. I didn’t have a chance to turn my back away from the grille except for an occasional greeting from the many patrons that I’ve befriended this summer. By the time I looked up and saw no more order tickets, it was well after 11. Three and a half hours of steady streaming orders and 143 customers served in that time. Going out with a bang was relished. I would have hated to have been bored on the last day. I’ll miss the cajoling with Jerome and the daily bantering. We’ve also enjoyed working with Mike, the Porkmeister. He made our transition as newbies go very smoothly, took me under his wing and showed me ropes I never experienced. I’ve learned so much from him. Also this past week, Robin and I were guests of Klaas and Judy (owners of the park). Klaas decided we would all go out to dinner. Apparently if you’re going to be invited back the following year, this is protocol. They picked us up at our site, and it was just a half hour drive to our destination. We dined at Emily’s Restaurant, a historic wayside manor, situated on Route 10 between Reading and Morgantown. The cuisine was sublime, the company comforting, and we were treated as celebrities. Klaas forced more food on us than we’ve been used to as of late. Even passing on dessert was not going to happen. During a lull in the conversation, just about the time the fruit and ice cream appeared, we were invited back for the following year. This is something that I’d never thought I’d do. That is to work in the same place two years in a row, regardless of how well we like it. Afterall, I’m the gypsy man. Moving all the time. But this experience has been unique. I’m not adept enough with the King’s English to do justice to describe the hospitality and the feeling of peace we’ve found here. My father was the most genuine of men that I’ve ever known. It was apparent to me that he would never have an equal. However, I have never been so impressed by someone as I am Klaas Bakker. It looks as if our rule will be broken. Our plans are to return again.

Today was a bit melancholic. It’s our last Sunday working here in the Gnome Cafe. Tomorrow is our last regular day of work as the season comes to an end. School is back in session, and the number of campers coming through the week won’t justify keeping the cafe open through the week. However, there still will be one more hurrah as we’ve agreed to provide the cuisine for the great Halloween fest at October’s end. It amazes both Robin and I how quickly the past three months have gone by and how enjoyable this work stint was. We almost feel guilty picking up our paychecks as working here is a labor of love along with being so much fun. This coming Saturday, we leave for Pittsburgh, as my brain surgery is scheduled for the following Wednesday. We plan on just relaxing and hopefully getting in some golf this week but that remains to be seen. After work, I headed out for my daily walk. I’ve been doing between five and six miles for the past two months. Never is the course on flat ground. It’s all hills, up and down. And I force myself to get out there in the middle of the afternoon, purposely when the heat is at its height. My sole purpose was to get myself in much better shape in order to rebound from surgery much in a more timely fashion. Dropping a few pounds may have been an added bonus but it wasn’t in the original scheme of things. I have been able to find the will to do this almost every day. I’ve missed only a few days when road trips back to Pittsburgh warranted doctors’ visits. But as I walk, this sense for surgery rebound has given way to a warped quest for discomfort. At my age, there are aches and pains daily. That’s normal with most of us. The knee hurts from an old football injury, the back from a surgical discectomy. My lungs burn as the rebuilt trachea is much smaller in diameter than it used to be. Lastly, the left hip still bears witness of the lady who smacked me to the asphalt while sitting on my motorcycle at the filling station. But instead of pampering these aches, I like to taunt them. I find that satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment emanates from a certain degree of misery. Without a modicum of pain, the effort seems useless. So I’ll continue up and down the hills of Lancaster county, in the heat of the day, changing nothing but adding to the distance. And sure, the discomfort will increase a bit each day. The aches accompanying each step but the trade-off is a greater sense of satisfaction for withstanding that distress. Ahh, what sweet nectar is the misery of hurt.
