I’m wondering where the days have gone. We’ve not done much of any significance in the past few weeks and now its time to leave Myrtle. I find not working to be quite expensive. And it’s not the lack of funds funneling into the bank account. It’s my contribution to the oil companies and department stores. I can’t sit still. Driving about ‘checking things out’ is an expensive hobby. And then my eye will be caught by a new golf course, a retail outlet that might have something I haven’t yet seen. And if not any of these I can always find something of a chrome nature that needs to be added to the truck. But a new diversion made it’s way into the foray just the other night. Neighbors Jack and Dottie invited us to a buffet on the Big M riverboat casino. We made the half hour drive over to Little River, boarded, and made our way to the dining room. While dining the boat makes its way north and east through the Intercoastal Waterway out to the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina laws prohibit gaming so machines and table games are idle untl we reach international waters. After forty-minutes and about four miles out, machines are lit, and an announcement comes over the intercom that we can now dole out our money. By now, Myrtle Beach is a tiny twinkling of lights in the distance. Traversing about the three decks we found Dottie breaking even, Jack to the good for about a hundred, and the Atantic an ominous and forboding venue on a cool and windy December eve. I’ve never had problems with waves rocking a boat but at twelve miles out, my shrimp creole was nudging my stomach, beckoning the bowels that they needed to come out. I could feel that swell of excess saliva. Walking toward the head, I noticed Robin’s pale face leaving the ladies room and I could tell that the Dramamine had no positive effect on her. She wished me luck as she laid her head on a nearby table. For the next hour we wallowed in our misery until we were nearing the intercoastal once again upon our return. Jack and Dottie rejoined us once Dottie lamenting her losses and Jack reveling in his winning. We listened to a great cabaret lounge singer and traded stories. By the time we returned to the Little River dock, any semblance of sea woes were an afterthought. We spent our last full day here watching football, finalizing Christmas purchases, and bidding goodbye to our neighbors over a glass of wine. We head north today to visit with the children, yearning to get our hands on Xavier, and see how much the little one has grown in the last six weeks. Grandchildren do make adjustments to the wanderlust life a must.

We didn’t drive far, landing just outside of Myrtle Beach last week. We settled in at Willow Tree Resort, one of the finest parks in all our travels. In fact, our first workamping stint came here some four years ago. This was the place in which I got fired for the first time in my life for using a cell phone to confirm a scheduled MRI at the hospital. Yep, that’s right. But its history and no sense going in depth at this point in time. The park however, is a five star facility that is aesthetically beautiful. They are offering a great deal for snowbirders this winter as well should you be interested. A three month stint here is being offered for #1300 which is quite a buy considering the pleasant atmosphere here.

No sooner did we put down that we were invited for dinner to the home of Mike and Gail. They bookend us with shifts working the grille and counter at Lake in Wood’s famous Gnome Cafe. We had a wonderful time reminiscing and catching up on work gossip since their departure in September. We’ve been together several times since, tooling around the area looking golf courses and vacation homes, wharfs, and unique little shops in an attempt to flirt the day away. We met them at Poo’s in Little River, which has become their famous cuisine haunt and enjoyed fresh flounder, fries, and hushpuppies. Apparently Poo’s has become a regualar Friday stop and we’re finding ourselves doing the same. Later in the week, more of Lake In Wood’s finest appeared at Willow Tree. Jerry and Cheryl pulled in for a few days by mid week on their journey to Florida. Again Gail and Mike hosted us all for meatloaf, chicken, homemade mac and cheese, beans, buns, and sweet potatoes. However, Mike’s grilled hors-de-ouvres were the hit of the evening in my opinion. They were sublime. The remainder of the week has been spotted with additional Christmas shopping, photos at the beach, walking and lifting weights, a bit of driving golf balls and generally running around and making deposits to the stations owned by the big oil conglomerates.

We left Lake In Wood last weekend, leaving the rig on site for the insurance adjuster to address. We headed West in the truck for a few weeks of visiting friends. Our plans were to meet up with Tom and Deanna at Table Rock Lake in western Missouri. Tom and Deanna are friends we worked with at the Elkhorn Cafe in North Dakota and haven’t seen them since January of 2010. Traveling through the Midwest is a mesmerizing endeavor, such that I had forgetten that one needs constant stimulation in the form of music or conversation to keep from running amuck. There is not much to visualize in the bread basket, especially at this time of year. We made it to St. Louis by Sunday and that evening bunked down in Sullivan, MO. By midday Monday we had encountered our guests, stopping at Tom’s new purchase first. They had bought a storage facility and were in the process of remodeling it. They plan on adding an apartment for their stay between jaunts to North Dakota and Arizona.
We were guests of Deanna cousins who own the Big Creek resort actually on the lake. The honeymoon suite was our abode for the next four days and just a stone’s throw from the lake. Luckily it was a full moon this week and the evening shots made for some great photos despite a constant downpour for the first two day. We visited their relatives, friends, and were hosted in homes for dinner as if we’d been going there for years. I met the most interesting of men….Uncle Lester. Uncle Lester is a throwback to the inventor of days gone by. His shop is meticulous, he has every tool imaginable and some unimaginable. However, he buys almost nothing, making it all from scratch or inventing whatever he needs. There were too many items in the shop to discuss but his air powered, homemade tricycle caught my eye the most. He even gave Robin a performance in the yard as his pride in workmanship showed through. Tom and Deana took us to out to lunch, out to dinner, shopping around and even a long day trip to Branson, the Nashville of the west. We scoured through store after store so the ladies could continue to put things into the RV’s and took in a show that evening. An Indian powwow, put on by Lakota Sious out of Brule. The costumes and dancing were great but the music was wonderful. What I thought might be a so-so experience proved quite entertaining. We had planned to stay longer but a call from Florda prompted our stay be held to four days. We had been offered jobs in Naples as resort directors and the owner asked they we arrive a bit earlier than expected. After spending the last night chatting and playing board games with Tom and Deanna we headed back to western PA for the final visit of the year to family. We spent our first travel night in Indiannapolis. And I was reminded of how much I needed to see some hills again. Be thankful for where you are….as you shall miss it when you’re gone. Back in western PA now for a weeks visit with friends and relatives since we won’t be here for Thanksgiving. Christmas shopping, visitations, football playoff games will be the key words for the week.

09/11/01 is stamped indelibly in our minds. We remember the morning, where we were, and the aftermath of that infamous date. Not to diminish those events, I commemorate that day in my own personal way. 9/11 was the date I chose for my cancer surgery and this marks my fourth anniversary sans the dreaded “Big C”. I celebrated with my son at the Bertil Roos Driving School by careening around the Pocono Raceway at speeds of 130 mph. Her purchased this day as a gift for my most recent birthday, sheduling it on this infamous of days. We drove the three hours to the Poconos on Saturday night, staying in a nearby hotel in order to be on time for Sunday morning. We arrived at the school by 8 a.m., registered, got fitted with our racing suits, helmets and sat in on the first of four lessons. Then it was off to the track, speeding first around the track in Malibu’s to garner a sense of the layout. Into the trailer for more instructions on handling, flags, and how to forget almost everything you were taught in regular traffic driving. Fitting into a Formula racer was the first feat for this mesomorph. The first run we were only allowed to do 85 mph until we gained a feel for the track. We, (there were five others along with Ryan and I) motored the track for 20 minute sessions, taking hairpin turns, passing on the inside along the wall, and doing our best not to spin out. That doesn’t seem like much but believe me , at high speeds that twenty minute session took it’s toll physically. After each session it was back into the classroom to be critiqued by four instructors that monitored our progress on the track. With each 20 minute session we got better and faster. I didn’t spin out until my third session. That was due to the fact that I was feeling a bit cocky, able to get my speed up well over 120, and allowed the Formula roadster to get a little out of control. It didn’t flip, but I did a complete 360, four times in about 3 seconds without peeing my pants. By the final of four outings on the track, I was as confident as I could ever imagine rolling down the wall at 132 mph, as we were clocked. I was hooked. I was possessed at taking the turns as narrow as possible, and burning the rubber in pursuit of whomever was in front of me on the track. The experience was the most exhiliarating, yet exhausting one I can remember. Holding onto that 9 inch wheel at those speeds tested not only the triceps but today it feels as if every sinewy nerve and muscle was taxed. I will be back. I’d like to say this was one more item on the bucket list, but that term is too finite and mortal. I have a long way to go and much to experience before I begin my bucket list. Until then, I’ll continue to be on the lookout for the ecstactic experience, what excites me or moves me to tears, that which makes the blood rush to my head, my heart skip a beat, my knees shaky and my soul sigh. Thank you, Ryan, for another day with my son, my friend, the thrill-seeker.

Yes, he has been replaced by a younger, prettier, and better golfer. Erin has taken up the sport. And much like he other athletic pursuits, she’s a natural. When she applies the mechanics of my instruction, she outdrives me as well as hitting her fairway woods much better. We’re still trying to overcome that softball swing the the cocking of that left leg. But that will come in time and again she will outshine her competition as she has much of her young life. But I wanted to share a short review with my fellow linksters, much like I share campground reviews, if ever in the South Jersey area. The Pitman Country Club in Sewell, NJ is a public facility having a regulation 18 hole golf course, a practice putting green, a driving range, a full service clubhouse restaurant and bar that also provides excellent catering services. This original Alexandar Findlay design provides golfers of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy their round, and maybe even break 70, 80, 90 or 100 for the first time!. The layout is relatively short in overall distance and it is forgiving off the tee but it will challenge you with it’s smaller green complexes. The course is affordable to play with a variety of pricing options and you will always find it in good condition.

The other course we played was the Riverwinds in West Deptford, NJ. I was excited when Erin booked tee times here as I knew this course was place scenicly along the Delaware River, and owned by Ron Jaworski, former Eagle quarterback and now and ESPN analyst. I imagined with that name recognition we were in for a great round. Some months ago, combined families dined here as a post-baptismal feast was held after Xavier’s christening. We imagined the golf to be as good as the dining. Not so. Right off the bat, the carts were all gas-powered and noisy enough that any hint of conversation while riding was out of the question. Our cart felt and sounded as if the drive train were about to drop out at any moment, leaving us with only cold clarity. I asked the starter our remedy should our cart falter out in no man’s land once away from the first tee. He noted the clubhouse number on the steering wheel to call. Erin and I glanced at each other with rolled eyes. Our starter instructed us not to adhere to the rule of 90 degress but to actually drive on the fairways as much as possible. This was another first for me. Only once were we out and about did I understand why. The roughs were so parched and dying of thirst they were actually brown. The course was not well maintained at all, and with a lofty fee, this made for an even more distraught afternoon. I do have to say that holes 13 through 17 lie along the banks of the Delaware, and the cargo ships rolling in, the jets approaching landing, made the Philadelphia skyline look pristine and picturesque. However, this was the only highlight of the course. I could not honestly recommend this venue to a friend. Nevertheless, as the ad states, playing with my daughter was priceless and has made ” Tuesdays with Erin” an anticipated event.

After Robin went to babysit the remainder of my week was typical. Ken and I played golf as we have a standing date every Tuesday. Ken works the pool while his wife Pat does her workamper stint in the office. I repeated the adventure again on Wednesday and had the best round of my life. This was short-lived as the weekend proved this to be a once in a blue moon score. In between, the pool has provided much needed relief from the hot spell we’re experiencing once again this July. Back to work on Thursday and a phone call from sister Lisa that she will be visiting us this weekend. An additional call came unexpected as Judy and Stoney Neal from Florida were headed this way to spend some time with us as they trek through to northwest PA. Judy tried to get into Lake In Wood for the weekend but we’re all booked up, so they had to find an alternative campground. It was great to spend time with my sister this weekend. Dining at the Gnome Cafe, canvassing the Amish countryside, and shopping the little out-of-the-way stores, made her visit pleasant while we worked and couldn’t spend time with her. I did however, get to chauffeur her and Robin around the countryside in search of even more purchasing venues after work. Upon our return, Judy had mentioned that her and Stoney would be over for a Saturday night festive occasion. After pleasantries and stories filling us in on the months since leaving Florida, Judy pulled out the electric accordion. Now this is not your father’s accordion. It’s a one man band machine that resonates sounds only a master could produce. Judy serenaded us for a while as the Simonson’s showed up as well for the evening entertainment. Soon it was the Neubauer’s and then the Noyle’s, Bill and Camille from across the street, passersby, and Kim and Jeff Wert drove down from up the hill and Jeff accompanied Judy with his acoustic guitar. In short time, a concert was being held impromptu at our site, and the crowd of about 20 meant that they was standing room only. The performance lasted until 10 as Judy performed request after request, crooning to many as her striking voice continued to pique our interest. Quiet hours began and the crowd dispersed, with hugs, and smiles and pats on the back. Judy and Robin attended services on Sunday morning as she was mesmerized by the pipe organ that I had showed her earlier and wanted to hear Michelle, daughter of Klaas and Judy, parlay her talents into the massive organ. Lisa and I sneaked off for one final round prior to work. After lunch, she returned West, noting that the visit was far greater than any expectations could have held. This was all I needed to hear as providing a good host is tantamount to my days.

Absence isn’t always due to duress or mental concern. Sometimes, a common existence can be mundane to the outside viewer. I always want to entertain but try as I might, my life’s days are not always the peak of stimulata. I thought I would share the past few weeks with you via photos. We’re back into the swing of things working at the Gnome Cafe. Thursday afternoon and evenings and then the morning shift through Sunday. It’s good to be working again. It provides the meaning that I seek and the appreciation of days off. Despite the economy, the season has been busy as hell.

We spent a few days last week at the beach. Sea Isle, New Jersey to be specific.

We were fortunate enough to stay in a beach house for a few nights but the days with Xavier is the real reason we made the trek to the shore. Like his mom, he’ll spend the summers of his young life there.

And as he has taken care of the needs of almost everyone he interacts with, his Dad will teach him more about the wilderness, giving him balance.

Not to be outdone by big brother Erin paid a visit for a few days.

She planned to treat me in joining her by playing eighteen on the local links. But my legs ached from a long day at the grille and the best I could so was a trip to Strasburg to ride the local railroad.

There was a child on the train a few seats in front of us. I have no idea who he was but the eyes drew me in and I needed to share this with you.

On the way back home the cornfields that we see on a daily basis never seem to grab my attention with the lushness and conformity of the rows upon rows giving a normalcy to a life speeding by.

Later the following week we took an Amish buggy ride as I clicked in the new family for posterity’s sake.

As we drove down Old Philadelphia Pike we came upon what we thought was an accident as the buggy puller was down for the count. Traffic had slowed thinking the mare a product of a crash with a vehicle but the heat and humidity just got the best of the equine and he decided he’d had enough and went down in a swelter, only to rise again and resume pulling the “plain people”.

Our ride took us down a few secondary roads, onto a dirt lane to a working Amish farm.

There we me a family but the young boys attracted my lens more than others. They seem to learn ropes of driving at an early age.

Although the Amish don’t cotton much to having their photos taken, this lad proved the perfect model. However, not the same can be said for his younger brother. When he caught my lens pointed his way, his reaction was much the adverse.

I filled in the remaining days trying my best to keep balls on the fairway and out of the ponds dotting the Hawk Golf Course.

The little time remaining after creating more family memories and manning the grille at the cafe has been spent watching Robin’s feeders bringing nature’s color to the windows outside the Bus.

Chris and Jay enjoyed their visit to the point that they spent and extra half day with us. By the time they left, Jay had become an expert on the Segway and Chris was treated to an afternoon tour of as much of the Amish countryside as we could. I’m adding a bit of Jay’s slideshow at the bottom of the post as he’s getting a handle on his new Canon 60D. Friday was back to work. Porkmeister Mike is the mainstay for the Friday night special but I had to fill in for him during his visit to the South Carolina low country. Now it was my turn to come up with a menu for the week’s end special. I chose Ziti marinara with sweet sausage and shredded parmesian cheese accompanied with slices of French bread. It proved to be a bigger hit that I expected. Eighteen pounds of Ziti along with several gallons of my homemade sauce went over the counter from 4 to 8 pm. The compliments I received were well worth the effort. Coupled with the special was training for the newbies, Ken and Gloria. This was the final installment of training I had to provide for the chef from the West. Ken and his wife have come here from Arizona for the summer. They’ll add additional help in the cafe and allow Mike and myself to have a little more time off. I’m not the most patient of teachers. My pedagogical skills have waned long ago since my days of a teacher. I expect others to pick things up as quickly as I had. Not always the case, but Ken was a trooper nonetheless. Hopefully, some of the hints I have offered will pay off and when I follow his shift he’ll leave the kitchen well prepared and well stocked for me. Saturday proved to be our busiest day yet this month. Robin and I worked this alone and that seems to work best for us. I’d rather be busy as hell but have my mind in ‘the zone’ and not have to be concerned about training anyone else. At days end we showered, packed a few bags and headed for southern Jersey. Xavier–grandson, heir apparent, consumer of my thoughts–will be getting baptized on Sunday and he is possessing my thought process. And I love it.

I was basking in the elixir of fatherhood yesterday. Unlike lyrics from “The Cat’s In the Cradle“, Ryan makes time for me which I find uncomparable. We exchanged stories about his new offspring, chased pars with another twosome on the links and then topped the evening off with a Phillies game. I have a penchant to see a game in every national stadium. This is not a bucket list or death wish item. I’m in no hurry. Just like playing golf in each of the contiguous forty eight, my quest to take in all the parks stems from watching Ray Kinsella play catch with his deceased father in Field of Dreams. We took in all the hoopla and sights, feasted on oil ladened fries and cheesesteaks, watched Harry Kallas posthumously on the big screen, and just enjoyed a men’s night out. Personnally, I felt like I was in a commercial from some Madison Avenue marketing firm discussing the merits of familial bonding. Our seats were four rows behind the dugout, the hometeam won, the drawing card hit a home run, the liberty bell rang out, and big bird danced in front of us. The only downside I felt in the entire was my own personal aversion to the style in which baseball players wear their pants today. I’m still old school. I like a lot of socks showing and still yearn for the stirrups. It dates back to the Freudian visions of a young teen mesmerized by heroes of the diamond, emblazoned on my mind’s eye, which still carries some weight in my personal bias today. Enough of my bantering, the show tells the story. Enjoy the pix below.

Posting has been slow this week. There is no campground WiFi so we’ve had to resort to our own Verizon MyFi. And that’s slow as well as cell towers are as scarce as the biting largemouths. A large part of the time has been spent exploring the lake. Lake Marion is the largest lake in South Carolina, centrally located and with territory within five counties. The lake is referred to as South Carolina’s inland sea. It has a 315-mile shoreline and covers nearly 175 square miles of rolling farmlands, former marshes, and river valley landscape. The Santee River was dammed in the 1940s to supply hydroelectric power, as part of the rural electrification efforts initiated under President Franklin D. Roosevelt‘s New Deal during the Great Depression. The lake, much like everything else around here is named after the Revolutionary War hero, Frances Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox”. If you’re a baby boomer you’ll remember on Sunday evenings back in the 50′s the weeekly program with the same name. I loved this show. At the east end the lake is dammed and the Pinopolis lock system leads into Lake Moultrie. Lake Moultrie offers a varied fishing environment. There are shallow swamps, black water ponds, thousands of tree stumps and live cypress trees, as well as large open areas of water. This lake does not form ice in winter months. A world record Channel Catfish weighing 58 lb was caught from this lake. The lake also holds the state record for Black Crappie (5 lbs). For fisherman that prefer the bank, the catfish tend to move up to shallow water near dusk and bite well at night. It is not uncommon for fisherman at Lake Moultrie to catch catfish over 20 lb (9.1 kg). Trotlines are common at Lake Moultrie as well as trolling and even arching with a bow and arrow by spotlighting catfish in the shallows at night. You would think after learning all this, I would be somewhat successful at either the bass, crappie, or some catfish catching. However, all I’ve managed to catch lately is a few decent photos. A diversion canal exists between the two lakes and the Pinopolis lock is a seventy-five foot drop to sea level and Lake Moultrie. From the lake the Cooper River then winds its way southeast to the seaport town of Charleston and then out to the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a full day trip through the locks across both lakes and then rolling into Charleston for some great dining, and then a hotel room for the night while the pontoon sits idly in dock. Another seven or eight hours brings you back to Eutawville, a helluva two day trip.
